Should College Athletes Be Paid?

Should College Athletes Be PaidHBO Real Sports ran a great special on college athletics last week. They showed the big business that college athletics has become and how college athletes are basically exploited. They are called amateurs so that everyone can get rich except for them. Its a horrible system of exploitation. Here are my thoughts on the HBO Real Sports Special

Should The Bengals Trade Carson Palmer?

draft famtasy footballCincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer has requested a trade from the team. Palmer has spent his entire career in Cincinnati and has only been to the post season twice. Both times his teams lost in the first round despite winning the division. The Bengals have refused to grant Palmer’s trade request and insist on holding onto the former all pro quarterback. This may be a mistake however as Palmer’s skills have declined noticeably over the past few years.

Palmer was on the verge of NFL stardom just four years ago. He was right on the next cusp of quarterbacks behind Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Brett Favre. He was in the class of guys like Donovan McNabb. (The decline of McNabb’s career is a whole different story). Palmer was a good quarterback that was about to become a great one. But then something happened. I don’t know what it is but Palmer lost something. His decision making become terrible and his velocity just doesn’t seem to be there anymore.

Any fantasy football geek can tell you how quickly Palmer’s stock has fallen. He used to be one of the best fantasy football quarterbacks going. Now he goes undrafted in many fantasy football leagues. The Bengals should trade Palmer and free themselves of his massive $11 million dollar contract. I am curious to see what head coach would pay him that much money and risk his career on a 31 year old quarterback that is clearly on the downside of his career.

The Bengals can recoup some draft picks and rebuild over the next season. Palmer can be free of Cincinnati and start throwing his costly interceptions for another team.

5 Quarterbacks Whose Teams Don’t Trust Them

Watching the Ravens Steelers game, one thing was pretty obvious. The Ravens still do not fully trust Joe Flacco. When the Ravens were up 21 to 7 in the first half, they went into their conservative gameplan. Teams like the Patriots, Colts and Saints go for the kill when they get the lead because of the faith in their quarterbacks. The Ravens don’t do this because they don’t trust Flacco. The offense is limited. Joe can make all of the throws but the team doesn’t trust him to do it. That got me thinking, what other teams don’t trust their big name quarterbacks.

Why NFL Owners Can Outlast The Players Association

The NFL playoff season is under way and that makes sports fans like myself happy. There are playoff games to watch and a Super Bowl game fast approaching. This is all well and good but there is a big cloud hanging over the NFL known as the expiration of the current labor agreement. It is almost a sure thing that the NFL owners will lock out the players. Today, I am going to tell you why the owners will beat the players in the annual tug for control.

NFL Players vs. Owners

The NFL labor fight is going to pit billionaires against millionaires. While the players are still building wealth, the owners are already filthy rich. The current labor agreement calls for a 60-40 split with the players getting the bulk of the revenue. The owners would like to reverse this trend and get the lions share of the 60-40 split. There seems to be no middle ground which can satisfy both sides.

While the players will have no income stream during the lockout, the owners will. The NFL shrewdly negotiated a deals with the television networks that requires them to pay for NFL games regardless of if there is a season or not. This deal only strengthens the power of the already deep pocketed owners. Men like Jerry Jones, who was able to make money investing in the oil and gas industry.

Why The NFL Owners Will Win

Men like Jerry Jones often get what they want. (See the $1 billion dollar stadium in Dallas). The owners are tired of paying exorbitant salaries to rookies and younger players. They want a larger portion of the revenue sharing pie and they want an 18 game season. The players are not just going to give up 20% of their revenue without a fight. Ultimately, the owners will win because they just have too much money.

The players have mortgage payments, car notes, loans, and hefty bills. With no NFL games being played, there will not be any money trickling in. Right or wrong, the owners will ultimately break the union.
